On April 16, a Journalist from the All-Media Center of Hainan Daily learned from the Agriculture and Rural Bureau of Changjiang Li Autonomous County that Changjiang Arus muskmelons, after strict technical processing and customs quarantine on the 15th, have been exported to Canada for the first time, marking their debut outside Asia.
It is reported that the commercial melons exported to Canada this time include two varieties: Arus muskmelons (5 tons, priced at $20 per kilogram) and Xizhou honeydews melon (15 tons, priced at $3 per kilogram). Previously, Arus muskmelons have been successfully exported to Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Reporters learned that Changjiang’s long-term arid climate with little rainfall, long sunshine hours, large temperature differences between day and night, coupled with the organic-rich coastal sandy soil in Changhua Town, provides unique climatic conditions for Arus muskmelon cultivation. In 2022, Hainan Guoxiansheng Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Guoxiansheng Company) successfully promoted the local cultivation and commercialization of Arus muskmelons in Changhua Town, obtaining exclusive variety authorization in Hainan and filling the gap in domestic high-end muskmelons that previously relied solely on imports. Known for its harsh planting requirements, exquisite appearance, and delicate taste, Arus muskmelon is hailed as the “Noble of Melons” and “Hermès of Melons”.
“This export to Canada is the first time our products have gone beyond Asia,” said ZOU Jianhong, general manager of Guoxiansheng Company. Currently, the company cultivates approximately 1,200 mu (about 80 hectares) of Arus muskmelons, with a per-mu yield of 800-1,000 melons per season and a per-mu benefit of over 50,000 yuan. The expansion of the core production area will start on May 1, and the planting area will be expanded to 1,800 mu in the second half of the year to make up for insufficient production capacity.
In recent years, the bumper harvest of Arus muskmelons has not only brought considerable economic benefits to local agriculture but also provided employment opportunities for hundreds of nearby residents. “We can work and earn money at our doorstep, with good income and the ability to take care of our families,” said WANG Shihua, a villager from Xincheng Village who has worked at the base for many years and now is responsible for base management and arranging nearby villagers to work there.
A relevant person in charge of the Agriculture and Rural Bureau of Changjiang Li Autonomous County stated that in recent years, targeting the export of Changjiang’s agricultural products, the bureau has actively built diversified marketing channels, encouraged agricultural enterprises to cooperate with large domestic and foreign e-commerce platforms, and developed direct supply and sales models for agricultural products. Meanwhile, relying on the public brand “Hainan Fresh Products”, it has increased support for the brand building of Changjiang’s agricultural products and promoted them through various channels such as social media and industry magazines to enhance brand awareness and reputation.
